American Representatives at Miss International

The American entries to Miss International are selected in a manner as confusing as Canadians, however it's still a bit complicated. Between 1963 and 1967, American women for entered a contest named Miss American Beauty, which selected the U.S. reps for Miss International. The title of Miss American Beauty, was used to designate the U.S. rep for many years until the late-1980s. The Miss International-USA contest surfaced for a little while in the 1970s, while Miss International Beauty-USA took place at least in 1980 and in 1992. For several years, the third runner-up at Miss USA competed for the title (with the occasional second or fourth runner-up substitutin for them), until the U.S. rep was chosen at-large, beginning in the early 1990s.

Phew.

It's interesting to note that, to the best of our knowledge, an American has only won ONE special award in the 40-year history of the pageant.
