There once was a local model from London, Ontario...seen here gracing the cover of the September 1981 issue of "London" magazine...
who decided to participate in her local pageant.
She won!
Then it was off to Toronto to compete for the title of Miss Canada 1982...
and guess what?
She won again!
A triumphant homecoming after winning the national title was just the beginning...
Soon, she began to travel across Canada, and became the spokesperson for several national companies...

Then, it was off to Lima, Peru for Miss Universe 1982...
In her national costume, inspired by the fashions of the Klondike era, and her fashion swimsuit...

The big night finally arrived... on July 26, 1982 at 10:57 PM EST...
"...Miss Canada is Miss Universe! Karen Dianne Baldwin is Miss Universe."

The following day, the above picture took up almost one-quarter of the front page of the "London Free Press".
"LONDON'S KAREN: MISS UNIVERSE" screamed the headline...and London continued to go wild!
The whirlwind of travel and excitement began... Here's Karen on the cover of an Italian magazine...

In August, she returned home to "Karen Baldwin Day". 50,000+ people lined up to see the parade welcoming her home. The lucky guy on the right is former mayor Al Gleason.
