Monique Kavelaars

Monique Kavelaars

Chalk one up for Canada! The lovely Monique Kavelaars, who reigned as Miss Teen Canada 1989, just won a silver medal in the fencing epée team competition at the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Nice job! The former-Miss Teen London, Ontario was one of three women on the team who fought a tiring match against their Cuban opponants, finally settling for second in a 45-37 loss.

Miss Teen Canada was discontinued in 1990, and Monique was the last woman to crown her successor. She also comes from a family which has had quite a lot of success in the pageant world: her twin sister, Ingrid, was also Miss Teen London in 1987 and was first runner-up in Miss Teen Canada, and their older sister Annette was Miss London 1984, and competed in the 1985 Miss Canada Pageant, won by Karen Tilley of Calgary, Alberta, who went on to become a Miss Universe semi-finalist.

So here's to Monique—Miss Teen Canada turned fencing star!
