On July 26, 1982, an entire nation jumped to its feet. Canada erupted with joy when a stunning young woman from London, Ontario won the Miss Universe title in Lima, Peru. Karen Dianne Baldwin, who, at age 18, was one the youngest women ever to win the title of Miss Universe, was also the first (and so far the only) Canadian to win a major international beauty competition.
Her hometown of London, Ontario —1982 population, about 260,000— is nicknamed the "Forest City" because of its lush, green surroundings. The largest city in southwestern Ontario embraced the lovely young woman when she won her city and national titles, and by the time Miss Universe rolled around, London was squarely behind her. There very likely will not be another city who is so supportive of a national titleholder for many years. Londoners showed their pride and affection for Karen before, during and after her reign, and she is still remembered fondly by many area residents.
Here's Karen, the lovely Canuck who won it all!
