The 13th Pan American Games are taking place right now in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and 42 nations from across the Western Hemisphere are competing in 34 different sports. Several of these sports, including baseball, water polo, and triathlon, serve as qualifiers for the 2000 Olympic Games. And just where are the 2000 Olympics being held? Of course, we all know! The beautiful city of Sydney, Australia. With this in mind, let's take a moment to reflect on the Land Down Under's contribution to the universe of beauty.
Kerry Anne Wells hails from East Victoria Park, a suburb of Perth, in the state of Western Australia. Perth, as many fans will note, hosted the 1979 Miss Universe Pageant, which ended in the collapse of the pageant's stage. Kerry Anne suffered a bit of a crisis as well at her pageant, held in Dorado, Puerto Rico on July 29, 1972: a television blackout plunged TV screens across the world into darkness just as the announcement of the winner was being made! Horrible timing, no? Might this oddly-timed fiasco have anything to do with a threatened strike by the members of the pageant technical crew? Who knows.
Disaster and darkness aside, Australia has played a lovely role in Miss Universe history as both host and home of one of the pageant's most delightful winners. Here's the stunning Kerry Anne, gazing off in the distance. Perhaps she's thinking of kangaroos, kookaburas, koalas, and home.
