Ann Sidney

Here at Jimmy's Pageant Page, the Miss World Pageant is something of great interest to us. The delightful contest transfixed the United Kingdom throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, and now the world looks on with anticipation each November to find out who will wear one of the most coveted titles in pageantry.

The nation with the most success at Miss World (tied with Venezuela) is the home to pageant headquarters, the the U.K.: the (other) fab four of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have given the world five winners.

Ann Sidney, a 20-year-old hairstylist from Poole in Dorset, won the much sought-after Miss World title over 41 other candidates on the 12th of November, 1964. She was the second Brit to capture the crown, with the United Kingdom's other victories coming in 1961, 1965, 1974 and 1983. Here's a look at the radiant young woman who took home the 1964 crown.
