2001 was another banner year for Canadians in the pageant world. Our country saw many successful competitors represent our flag with pride, honour and distinction.

In times when specific dates of events or happenings are not known, but the month is available, these events are listed under the last calendar day of each month. Please also note that this is, by no means, an exhaustive list of all the events that took place in Canada this year. Most notably in Alberta and Newfoundland, several additional, well-received events took place.

Let’s take a look back at some of the highlights…

Be sure to take a look at the JPP Awards for 2001 after the timeline!

Cheers and Jeers

Cheers

Diversity: South Asian representatives win two national titles, while the top three in Miss Canadian Universe were three women of South Asian or Vietnamese origin.

Winners with platforms: No more vapid queens smiling smiling in hospitals and waving in parades. Both major national organization’s titleholders, and most notably the ladies in Newfoundland, had issues to promote while wearing the crown in 2001.

Former titleholders on judging panels: Most notable was the appearance of Miss World 1963 and 1970 on the Miss Canada International jury.

Breaking with tradition: CSMU featured up-tempo and hip music throughout the show (soulful yet funky afropop for the swimsuit competition, and Daft Punk’s “One More Time” before Miss America found it) while Miss Canada International had a fantastic, cozy format for the semi-final interviews. Who would have thought that shattering the mould could have been so successful (he said with a hint of irony in his voice)?

Jeers

Language luxuries: The Miss Canada International pageant this year did not have appropriate interpreters for those who wished to express themselves in French again.

Web wars: Smear campaigns on message boards.

“Miss-hap Canada”: No one is Miss Canada. Organizations and titleholders must get this through their heads. Enough said.

Catty contestants: Bitchiness went out in the 1970s, and was frankly never in style.

See you in 2002...!
